Newman Outreach Project: Winter 2016
The Newman Outreach Project is the Service Immersion Experience Program of the Newman Community at Virginia Tech. While there are many opportunities for service at Virginia Tech, NOP is different in its approach. Students learn how to accompany a community, growing in relationships with those they serve, and being open to any needs of the community. It is less about building a roof and more about building a relationship.
This year about 90 students will participate in the Newman Outreach Project with 10 total trips, 4 in the winter and 6 in the spring. Each group begins their preparation months before the trip in weekly meetings with student trip leaders they explore Catholic Social Teaching, learn about the communities they will be visiting, and grow together as a group. Some students who have recently returned from winter trips to Haiti, Mexico, Los Angeles, and New Jersey have shared some stories and reflections from the experience.
