Service

Service, one of the three pillars of Newman at Virginia Tech, has become a way for Newman to share its talents, time, and faith with the surrounding community. Service efforts at Newman are aimed at giving back and providing for the needs of several different communities including the local community of Blacksburg, the community of the New River Valley as well as the community of the United States and abroad. Currently, there are several opportunities available to get involved and help meet the needs of all of our communities.

Local Service

Local service, which began in Fall 2009, is currently supporting two events per month to local organizations such as the YMCAs in Blacksburg and Shawsville, Habitat for Humanity and the Roanoke Rescue Mission. Heritage Hall trips allow students the opportunity to visit and play bingo with assisted living individuals. Newman house renovation events focus on improvement and maintenance of the Newman house for the enjoyment of all members of Newman.

Local Service Committee

The Newman community local service committee is looking for new members to help plan and coordinate scheduled and future service events for this fall semester. This is a great opportunity to have your opinion heard as well as to help organize Newman’s local service efforts. We have regular meetings on Tuesday nights at 8:00 PM at the Newman house. If you are interested in learning more please contact Nicole Catalfamo (nicole15@vt.edu) or feel free to stop by one of the meetings.

Roanoke Service Day

Roanoke Service Day (Oct. 2nd 2010) began in Fall 2009. This event was organized for the purpose of giving back to the Roanoke community that has done so much for Newman at Virginia Tech. Just as last year’s event, a retreat will be held on Friday Oct. 1st for the participants of the event. This retreat will focus on group bonding as well as focusing on the purpose of our service in Roanoke. This year, Newman will be working with Habitat for Humanity, Roanoke Rescue Mission as well as the Roanoke Wildlife Rescue. The event will be held from 9am to 4pm.

Get Involved

Newman is always looking for new ideas on ways and places to serve. If you would like to have a hands-on role in planning events or would like to have your ideas heard, please come by the Local Service Planning meetings on Tuesday nights at 8:00 PM at the Newman house. If you have any questions or thoughts, please feel free to contact Nicole Catalfamo (nicole15@vt.edu).
